The media in the U.S. is in the forefront of turning our democracy into demockracy. This is currently evident in the Iraq war coverage. The cable channels are the worst offenders, but the networks are not far behind. The coverage, including the "embedded" journalists, is mostly to act as cheerleaders for the Pentagon and the presidents war policy. |

We are at a pivotal point in history, thus the decision by the U.S. and Britain to wage war on Iraq, rather than working tirelessly for a civilized resolution through the United Nations, is a tragic step backward to the barbarism of 20th century warfare. Time is crucial! It's imperative that we do all that is necessary to initiate a dramatic change to end the violence and war that now threatens the very fabric of our civilization. |

AGENT ORANGE
It's ironic that at the same time U.S. military teams are desperately looking for evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, specifically chemical weapons, an extensive scientific report was just released on the massive use of the chemical Agent Orange by the U.S. in Vietnam. The five-year study by health experts from Columbia University, working under a U.S. government contract, found the amount of the cancer-causing dioxin in Agent Orange was previously underestimated. |

Anguish and guilt are what at least some of the soldiers in the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which has borne the brunt of the fighting in Iraq, are now experiencing. They have found themselves fighting a grossly outmatched opponent. The Christian Science Monitor quoted one 3rd Infantry Division soldier saying, "For lack of a better word, I feel almost guilty about the massacre. We wasted a lot of people."

The burning of books and the destruction of works of art is so powerful a symbol ofbarbarism that the stench of it hangs in the air long afterwards: it is somethingimpossible to forgive, impossible to forget. There was an ancient Greek called Herostratus who burned down the Temple of Artemis for the sole reason that he thought that his action would make his name remembered; he was quite right. |

A Profound Transformation of the global political structure and international relations has taken place in recent years. The United States has emerged as the wealthiest and the most powerful military power in the world. Its supreme imperial power and unilateralism in the globalized world threatens the present rule of law, peace and security. The United States is planning to invade Iraq, a sovereign nation, violating the U.N. Charter and the international law. It has already withdrawn from the ABM Treaty after 30 years and is planning to build a national missile defense (NMD) system disregarding the 1967 Space Treaty. Besides, it has challenged several major international treaties such as the banning of land mines and chemical weapons, Kyoto Climate Change Accord and more. In short, the U.S. has emerged as a challenge to the integrity of the United Nations - the only organization with the mandate of settling international disputes and maintaining peace and law in the world. If unchallenged by the people of the world, this may result in global anarchy. |
